A Study On Parts Of Speech Conversion In Armadale—a Translation Practice

The paper deeply studies the pragmatic function of source text by excerpting the second chapter of Armadale as the target of translation.In line with the principles of faithfulness and smoothness,the author will focus on the application of lexical conversion in translation from English to Chinese.The author lists examples in the novel Armadale to experience the practical application of “Functional Equivalence”.At the same time,she also analyzes how nouns are translated into verbs,how nouns are translated into adverbs,and how prepositions are translated into verbs.The purpose of this paper is to explore the pragmatic function of the parts of speech in the translation work.It is aimed at the essential questions as whether the conversion of speech parts can strengthen the “elegance” of the sentence expressions or the “expressiveness” of the linguistic meaning.It is also to explore the “Function Equivalence” translation theory and to see how the theory serves for the language elegance in the direction of transformation of parts of speech in English to Chinese.By looking into the questions and then seeking out solutions,the author accumulates experience for the later similar literary works.There are two main problems to be solved in the paper.One is whether the conversion of speech parts strengthens the “elegance” of the sentence expressions or the "expressiveness" of the linguistic meaning.And if so,how? The other is how the theory serves for the language elegance in the direction of transformation of parts of speech in English to Chinese translation? In addition,the language features of this research text and the “Function Equivalence” theory as a guiding role in the translation process will be considered.It is concluded that the pragmatic use of translation strategies such as parts of speech conversion does help translators to produce a better work of translation and to promote the linguistic effectiveness in cultural and social communication through literary works.In addition,using the novel as a translation target has a certain role in guiding the study of the linguistic features in similar detective literary works.
