Nowadays, with the development of economic globalization, more and more Chinese college students are interested in foreign politics works. The translation of political texts therefore becomes an important part in the field of translation studies. In consideration of that fact, this report attempts to discuss the translation strategies of political texts with functional equivalence theory as the theoretical guidance. These translation materials come from Global Politics, an American universities’textbook written by Juliet Kaarbo and James Ray.With distinct stylistic features, the material belongs to political essays. It has comprehensively elaborated the political background and the mode of operation among independent countries. The targeted readers are university students in China and the translation task is to help them know about the mode of international political operation from a new perspective in order to promote mutual development and cooperation of nations.Based on translation practice, this report has collected some examples from the translation materials and analyzed them so as to study translation methods of political essays. The main body presents the analysis of lexical, sentence, textual and rhetoric under the guidance of functional equivalence theory presented by Eugene Nida. The analysis of lexical includes the use of literal translation and annotation in translating terminological and context influence of semantic translation. The analysis of sentence includes the use of amplification, shift of perspective and division from aspects of parenthesis, non-predicate and subordinate clause. The discussion on textual translation mainly focuses on word order from a macro perspective. In order to achieve rhetorical equivalence, the analysis of rhetoric is conducted from two aspects, sense of word and sentence pattern. The last part concludes the difficulties of the translation practice, and the translation methods of political essays.
