Since the 1980s, the main concern of Chinese archaeological research has shifted into the Settlement Archaeology. Accordingly, its methodology has been widely identified and rapidly developed, and the research of regional settlement patterns also has been received unprecedented attention. Combining with GIS, archaeological excavations, exploration and other technical means, Regional systematic investigation has been proved to be an effective method of settlement archaeology research, which can reveal the evolution of settlement patterns in specific regions, and probe into the process of social complexity in these areas.Xue River Basin, located in Shandong, is characterized by dense sites, abundant of remains of Dawenkou Culture, and relatively complete archaeological culture pedigree. Previous studies mainly focus on identifying and classifying one specific archaeological culture as well as discussing the relationship with its surrounding cultures. While some issues, like characteristics of macro and micro settlement patterns and social structure of Xue river basin are neglected. The application of Spatial Form of Settlement Analysis enables us to reconstruct the macro and micro settlement pattern of Xue River Basin during the period of Dawenkou Culture. Having taken it into consideration, this thesis aims to reveal the characteristic of inner structure of individual settlement, the interrelationship among different settlements and the similarities and differences of different settlement in the process of social development. On the basis of it, this paper will discuss the role of Xue River basin in Haidai region during the period of Dawenkou Culture.According to the writing goal, this article is divided into five parts.Part I:Introduction. First, reviewing the history of previous archaeological work. Second, summarizing the history, methodology, and achievements of Regional System Survey Project in Xue River Basin. Third, giving a brief introduction of this topic, research ideas and methods.Part II:Reconstruction of natural environment. First, regarding the modern natural environment in the region of Xue River Basin as a control group. Secondly, adopting natural science and Environmental Archaeology methods, I attempt to reconstruct the natural environment in this area during the period of Dawenkou Culture for further discussion.Part III:Characteristics and evolution of macro settlement patterns of Xue River Basin in Dawenkou Culture period. This chapter, the main part of this paper, is divided into three sections. In the first section, article focuses on establishing relative chronology in Xue River Basin in Dawenkou Culture, by analyzing the typical remains, such as pottery, and adopting stratigraphy and typology. In the second section, I emphasize on the distribution of settlements and their connection via GIS technology to gather data, calculate area, and dived settlements into different zones. In the third section, the settlement level and group are divided based on their sizes. Each level and group is deeply analyzed.Part IV:The development of the general settlement situation from Beixin to Longs han Culture.
