Settlement archaeology is an important archaeological theory, especially for the prehistoric studies. The Neolithic cultures in the Yalu River,Tumen River and Wusuli River basins are important part of the archaeological culture system in Northeast China.Based on previous archaeological researches, issues relating to settlement layout and social development along the three river basins are discussed aiming to reconstruct the feature of early societies.Due to varieties of climatic conditions and natural resources of the Yalu,Tumen and Wusuli River, different types of economy and culture are observed, which formed the diversity of social features.According to the analyses in this paper, proportions of agricultural products in societies along the Yalu River are higher than those along the Tumen and Wusuli river due to modest environment in the former region. So is the socia-economic development of settlements.Expansion and development of agriculture and settlements in the Tumen River basin were restrained by its geographical and environmental conditions. In this region, fishing and hunting activities were always the focus and societies remained at low level.Residents in the Wusuli river basin made full use of water resources, promoting the fishing and hunting economy.Despite of lacking agriculture,"Neolithic Revolution" was believed to take place on the basis of developed fishing and hunting activities.Societies in the Wusuli River were at high level as evidenced by a lot of ceremonial jade.
