There is a kind of verb relevant to our everyday life, which is the verb of chewing. And this kind of verb means the act of some kind of eating patterns commonly. Currently due to lack of in-depth researching issues or writings, it becomes necessary for us to discuss it.It has been discussed in detail which contains this issue’s object, content, aiming, significance, previous researching, research method and origin of corpus in the introduction part.Chapter Two, the characters of the verb of chewing has been analyzed, excluded and summarized, and then been defined its basic concept through classifying 63 dietetic verbs into 7 kinds in Zhang Shuang (2014) essay firstly. Meanwhile, collecting related data to complement the above concept,57 verbs have been delimited and 9 chewing verbs in modern Chinese language of them have been focused on studying. Next, these 9 verbs have been classified from various angles, such as meaning of the word, structure type, and stylistic flavor, etc.Chapter Three, the 19 verbs have been put more emphasis on the basic meaning. First, here comes the conclusion of the five kinds of chewing verb, which is "bite", "chew", "gnaw", "crack", and "ruminate" via the charts and tables. Again, analyze the affinity among these five kinds of verbs, after comparing 10 groups of the chewing verbs by using related 28,16 and 14 semantemes.Chapter Four, discuss the object, method, level, situation, result, and other related metaphorical meaning of the verb-"bite", "chew", "gnaw", and "crack" through the connection between theory and practice and the connection between narration and description separately.Chapter Five, basing on the argument of chewing verb, study the syntactic role (subject, object), and constitution of "bite", "chew", "gnaw", and "crack", and research the semantic role(agentive, patientive) and feature of these verbs severally.Here then comes the conclusion of this essay and the shortcomings, in order to lay the foundation of the next research.
