Chinese mythology is a kind of literary forms. It is created by ancient Chinese people in the process of long-term social practice and laboring life. With strong and vivid national character, it is a bright gem in Chinese culture. Nowadays, cultural communication between China and foreign countries is increasingly frequent, so the translation of Chinese mythology into English can facilitate foreign readers’ understanding of Chinese customs, practices, history and tradition, broadening their knowledge of Chinese culture. This thesis takes the C—E translation of the excerpts from Chinese Myths and Lengends as an example. From the perspective of Skopos Theory, it analyzes both the problems and corresponding solutions in the process of translation so as to summarize some strategies applicable to the English translation of Chinese mythology. The first chapter is task description that contains task background、source text introduction and theoretical basis. The second chapter is implementation process that gives a brief introduction of problems and solutions during the translation process. The third chapter is a case study analyzing how the translation is done by adopting proper translation strategies under the guidance of Skopos Theory. The fourth chapter is the summary that involves reflection on this translation task.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, this thesis extracts source text and makes proper deletion. It uses the strategies transliteration, literal translation and added annotation to overcome obstacles of language and culture, rendering the translated Chinese mythology accessible to foreign readers for the purpose of better understanding and acceptance.
