As one of the five permanent members of the United Nations,China plays an important role in the work of the UN.Chinese,as one of the six UN official languages,is also widely used.Most UN documents are first compiled in English and then translated into other official languages.For the past few years,the United Nations has initiated a project to translate the previous English versions of the Yearbook of the United Nations into Chinese.Soochow University has been translating the United Nations Yearbook Express from English to Chinese for the Yearbook Unit of the United Nations Department of Public Information.The author,as one of the MTI students,has participated in the translation project for 6 volumes of the UN Yearbook Express.She has had a better understanding of the whole translation process,the translation problems that may be encountered and the corresponding techniques that can be employed.The UN Yearbook Express translation,a combination of independent thinking and group collaboration,requires accuracy,consistency and fluency.Therefore,the translators have paid great attention to the general principle of translation and have spent a lot of time on the stages of discussion,revision and proofreading in order to complete this work with high quality.According to what she has learned from this translation project,the author writes a report on the UN This report gives a summary of Tytler's three principles of translation and applies the theory to the English-Chinese translation for the UN Yearbook Express.On the basis of analyzing the textual features and the translation principles of the Express,the translation report aims at conducting a specific research on translation difficulties and solutions at the lexical level,the syntactical level and the textual level by analyzing typical examples taken from the Yearbook Express and comparing the three translation versions,so as to provide useful references and suggestions for the translation of similar text types.
