A Report On The Translation Of Under The Greenwood Tree (Part Ⅱ)

This report is based on the translation practice of the novel-Under the Greenwood Tree written by Thomas Hardy. This story contains deep significance and it is worth exploring. Unfortunately, the culture-loaded words in this novel are very difficult for us to understand. Culture-loaded words are the basis of the cultural inheritance and the symbols of different languages and cultures. In the communication process, we should pay attention to the culture-loaded words. This report intends to discuss the translation methods of culture-loaded words from the cultural perspective. According to Nida’s theory of dynamic equivalence, the translator should attach great importance to the meaning and spirit of the original text instead of paying much attention to the form of the language in the translation process. Therefore, the author of this report uses this theory as the theoretical foundation of this report.In order to have a better translation, the author will introduce the definition of the culture-loaded words. Meanwhile, according to Leech’s point of view, the author will classify the culture-loaded words in the original text from the perspective of conceptual meaning and the cultural connotation. Then according to the classification of the culture-loaded words and based on the theory of dynamic equivalence, various translation strategies and methods will be discussed by the author to translate the culture-loaded words in this novel. And meanwhile, the author will discuss the translation effects by using these translation methods. Besides, in order to achieve the optimal translation effect, the author will summarize proper methods to translate these words. These translation methods are literal translation, free translation, cultural substitution and literal translation with notes. Through the study of the culture-loaded words, the author hopes that it will make target text more faithful to the original text. In a word, the author hopes it can give the readers some enlightenment and reference on how to translate the culture-loaded words in English-Chinese translation.
