This report is done on the basis of the translation practice of Under the Greenwood Tree.Published in 1882,Under the Greenwood Tree is a work of pure delight and the truly light-hearted novel of Hardy.Under the Greenwood Tree,as the first literary work of Hardy's Wessex novels,is well worth translating and studying. There are six chapters in Part One in this translation project. This part is characterized by distinctive image-shaping,which not only sets keynote for the development of the plot in the novel but also portrays the rural life in the southwest of England.Nord's functionalist approach embraces two backbones: Function plus Loyalty.“Function rule refers to the factors that make a target text work in the intended way in the target situation”(Nord 126).And thus it helps to achieve the communicative function.“Loyalty rule refers to the interpersonal relationship between the translator, the source-text sender, the target-text addressees and the initiator”(Nord 126).Loyalty rule is conducive to implementing the functions of target text and effectively restricting the intentions of all parties so that the target text can be better adopted by target readers. The translator intends to deal with the original work in Chinese and makes an analysis of dialogue translation under the guidance of Nord's Functionalist Approach. The translation report gives an introduction to the linguistic features and difficulties as well as the theoretical basis of the excerpt. With Nord's Functionalist Approach as the guiding theory, the methods of free translation and literal translation are used to illustrate typical translation cases properly at lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels in the translation practice. The translation report aims at revivifying the pleasant picture and culture in the southwest of England.
