Measure words is the last group to have its name in modern Chinese. Its range is more extensive and its internal structure is more complex. With the development of modern Chinese language, measure words has been playing a more and more important role in people’s daily communication. Therefore this paper makes the measure words as the main study point, the Kenya students as the object, and the learners’ errors as the basis, classifying the students’ errors, finding the causes of the formation and exploring certain teaching strategies and learning methods to help the students to avoid misusing of the measure words.This thesis is divided into six chapters:The beginning part is the introduction, mainly contented with three aspects: the study purpose,meaning and value of the thesis, Kenya language background information and some positive and negative conditions for Chinese teaching and learning in Kenya. The first chapter summarizes the measure words’ current study in the academic field of Chinese grammar and TCFL(Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language). In addition, some deficiencies of the measure words are also revealed. The second chapter gives a brief introduction of the measure words in the different languages of Chinese, English and Swahili, providing the basic theory for the third chapter. The next following chapter includes an interview of certain Chinese teachers in Kenya, two sets of questionnaires of the local Chinese-learning students and the correspondent data results. Then the fourth one mostly discourses upon the error classification and the causes of error formation. The fifth chapter is the suggested teaching strategies and learning methods in the process of measure words’ teaching and learning. The last part is the conclusion of this thesis, it summarizes the main viewpoint and expresses the optimistic expectation of the measure words’ teaching and deeper study in TCFL.
