As interpreting, especially diplomatic interpreting, is becoming increasingly important in China’s external interaction, interpreters are facing a difficult challenge to deal with culture-loaded expressions. Those expressions pose a higher requirement on interpreters as it is hard to find the equivalent expressions in the target language in a short period of time. This practice report aims to discuss the proper way to handle culture-loaded expressions in diplomatic interpreting from the perspective of the Theory of Skopos. It is found that in diplomatic interpreting, instead of being true to the original context, writing style and form, the purpose of the interpreting is the top priority an interpreter should bear in mind. In addition, the interpreter also has the responsibility to make the target language understandable and to respect the original text of the speaker.Under the guidance of the Theory of Skopos, the strategies of literal interpreting, interpreting with explanation and implication interpreting are suggested to cope with the culture-loaded expressions in the chosen materials. The framework of this report consists of five chapters: first, a general picture of the report and the features of diplomatic interpreting; second, previous studies on culture-loaded expressions and on the Theory of Skopos; third, case description; fourth, problems encountered in the author’s interpreting practice and their respective coping strategies; fifth, conclusion.
