In a sense, it can be said that human history is a history of the pursuit of freedom, but people often confuse freedom with such words as arbitrariness or slackness which distorts the real meaning of freedom. One of the philosophers’ missions is to explain “what the real freedom is”, or help us understand the real meaning of freedom. Sartre is such a philosopher, who had devoted himself to the great mission of revealing the real meaning of freedom, therefore his philosophy is known as “the philosophy of freedom”, and it’s not difficult to find that the concept of freedom is very important in his philosophical system. As a philosopher, Sartre spent all his life on pursuing freedom, and made an in-depth analysis of freedom. By means of writing, Sartre actively intervened in life and history, practiced his idea of freedom.Except preface and summary, the paper consists of three chapters. The first chapter is to introduce the time background and the thought origin of Sartre’s freedom. Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger, Marx are the main people who effect Sartre. In order to have a multi-view understanding about Sartre, in final part of this chapter, I use Raymond Aro and Merleau-Ponty as critical frame of reference. Chapters II and III are the subject of this article. The second chapter discusses the basic content of views on liberty and its internal logic, I will divide it into two stages that is the absolute freedom of the individual and freedom which associated with social. Besides, I will make a further analysis of the reason why he converts. The third chapter is to explore the the inner tension of Sartre’s freedom.Though, Sartre’s view are being perfected, there are always some tension which he couldn’t solve.
