A Practice Report On The Translation Of **Plant Functional Specifications

With the continuous development of international trade and the great technological advancements in China, more foreign governments and businesses are optimistic about new technological projects in China. Many Chinese companies pay attention to the international market, actively participating in international commercial biddings. Among many scientific projects in China, outstanding technological achievements in electricity projects continue to emerge, which are much favored by the international market. Accordingly, it leads to increased demands for the translation on power files, which means that translation quality of power files could have a profound impact on the biddings.Based on English-Chinese translation of plant functional specifications for a combined cycle power plant in Bibiyana-II, this report focuses on source text analysis and translation methods. It is divided into four parts. In the first chapter, it introduces the project’s source, background and significance. In the second chapter, both translation tools and translation theory are discussed before translation, and then the writer chooses the appropriate strategies of translation according to the analysis of the text. In the third chapter, the writer analyzes the translation skills in terms of lexical and syntactic. In word translation, terminology and modal verbs are discussed; as for sentence translation, long sentences and passive sentences are analyzed. In the fourth chapter, the writer explores the problems and shortcomings identified in the process of translation.Based on the experience related to the translation of the functional specifications, this report suggests that for the practical technical style that characterizes plant functional specifications and other business-technical genres, an analysis of functions and features of their language is no less important than an in-depth understanding of the source text. According to the analysis, appropriate strategies can be taken. The appropriate strategies matching the source text in functions help the translation reproduce source text at the dimensions of form, meaning and function.
