Ahead of the global anti-terrorist war which summoned by U.S. began, a regional security organization composed of multi-nations which named Shanghai Cooperation Organization, or SCO for short, was formally built. From the birth of SCO till today, what it experienced through the13years has been all recorded by U.S. media. However, among what U.S. media has reported, I’m wondering how many of them are true, correct, comprehensive, and curious about those fallacious, one-sided and out of self-interest. When the attempt to find the answer in existing books failed, I decided to study those issues on my own. So there comes this paper. On the basis of thoroughly reading, deeply analyzing and comprehensively generalizing more than a hundred news tests chosen from six sorts of mainstream newspapers, five sorts of most widely-read magazines and two kinds of most popular audiovisual media, and also of quoting other relevant works, this paper provides a detailed report on how U.S. mainstream media depicts SCO and what kind of attitude towards that group.Looking from the quantity and frequency of U.S. reports on SCO, they have paid less interest and attention than those of China. What U.S. media mostly care about are those about politics, military, energy and security that took place in SCO frame. They tend to describe SCO as a Sino-Russian battlefield, one of the world power centers and an emerging platform of regional cooperation. After series of research, the question why SCO got those multi-images under U.S. media should resort to mainly four facts:the development of SCO’s status and mechanism, the change of global environment, the remaining of cold-war mindset among U.S. society, and the inherent characteristics of U.S. media. Those news tests have taught us that although we have encountered lots of prejudice and misunderstanding, we should remain clear-headed about what we have contributed to regional peace, and confident that we will do more to the goodness of all humanity. If we want to enhance a positive image and a greater influence of SCO to the world, feasible measures might be:to emphasize each nation’s own media and step up international media cooperation, to speak with one voice and gain SCO nations’collective discourse power, and last but not least, to draw more support from those well-known scholars and experts.
