Residence and employment in urban development process two particularly important factors. At the micro level, a reasonable commuting behavior that produces behavior between living and employment, enabling people to reduce travel costs, saving travel time and help to improve people’s living standards; the macro level, a reasonable commuting behavior will help reduce urban roads traffic pressure, relieve urban road traffic congestion, less pollution in urban transport, in favor of building a sustainable city.China is facing a transition period of internal reorganization and external remodeling. Residents in daily commuting behavior during commuting time and distance are longer, people’s hearts are under the dual pressures brought about by the long and long, changing the behavior of residents commuting from nature. For commuting behavior is satisfactory overall.In this study, both theoretical and empirical aspects of Xining City residents commuting spatial characteristics discussed. First, explained the background and significance, based on commuting behavior research progress at home and abroad to carry out a comb and summary. Secondly, the use of a questionnaire survey method in Xining four main city selected 15 representative communities questionnaires and in-depth interviews, get the main data of this study. Third, with the support of GIS software such as ArcGIS and SPSS statistical analysis software, Xining residents commute to the spatial characteristics were analyzed and discussed, the main conclusions are as follows:(1)From commuting time, commuting distance commuting, commuting costs, and commuter satisfaction perspective, Xining residents commuting time, mainly in less than 30 minutes; daily trips to the bus as the main way of commuting; commuting time span large, commuting costs low. For commuting behavior is satisfactory overall(2)From the perspective of different social attributes, the average commute time for men than women 8.7 minutes; residents of all ages are walking in the selection of various modes of transportation, such as taxi shuttle units are used interchangeably in many ways; the higher income residents commute the greater the distance; the more complex family structures are more complex travel behavior characteristics.
