Since the construction of rural people’s livelihood has been a vitally important issue during the period of China’s revolution and construction, the Party’s first generation of leadership, with Mao Zedong as the representative, carried on the tough exploration of this work. Based on the practice of rural people’s livelihood led by the Party, Mao Zedong’s Thought of the Rural People’s Livelihood Construction inherited the related theories of Marx, Engels and Lenin, and was influenced by Mao Zedong’s personal development and Chinese traditional and regional culture. His thought mainly includes six aspects: first, improving farmers’ scientific and cultural level as well as the level of ideological and political education; second, improving farmers’ living standards on the premise of solving their problems of land and on the basis of raising their grain output, by focusing on the agricultural cooperation and taking infrastructure construction as a guarantee; third, promoting rural employment through the path of agricultural mechanization; fourth, introducing “system of the five guarantees " so as to establish the basic content of social security; fifth, developing the rural cooperative medical system and improving the conditions of rural medical care and health; sixth, exploring the new way of rural social management through improving the relationship between country and farmers, as well as correctly handle contradictions among the people, the household registration system and people’s commune system. As an important part of scientific system of Mao Zedong’s thought, Mao Zedong’s Thought of the Rural People’s Livelihood Construction enriched and developed the Marxist related theories, and also accumulated valuable experience for domestic corresponding problems. At the same time, there were some imperfections in the construction of that time and they mainly were as follows: some impractical thoughts; insufficient security in the system; inadequate mobilization for farmers’ individual activity, etc. Still, it has a profound enlightenment on China’s contemporary “issues concerning agriculture, rural areas and farmers". Firstly, the construction of rural people’s livelihood should respect the objective laws, attach importance to practice, and adhere to the attitude of seeking truth from facts. Secondly, it needs to carry forward the method of overall consideration, which takes into account both farmers’ material life and spiritual civilization, and balances urban and rural development. Thirdly, it should pay attention to farmer’s dominant position, adhere to the mass line and fully arouse their enthusiasm. Fourthly, it should focus on solving serious problems among farmers. Fifthly, it is supposed to establish and improve the rural people’s livelihood security mechanism, making the policy and practice consistent with each other.
