If there is no national defense, the state will not independent, people won’t have stable life. National defense plays an important role in protecting national security, stability and people’s lives and work. Military theory teaching of general institutes of higher education is one of the main ways of national defense education and is an important way for colleges and universities to participate in national defense construction, which aims to improve students’ defense capabilities, inspire patriotic fervor and national pride, what’s more, to provide theoretical knowledge support for university students to participate in the modernization of national defense.However, Military theory teaching of general institutes of higher education in many areas is not optimistic by analyzing the actual situation of practice of it. In this study, I take Chongqing as an example, use the questionnaire and interviews conducted a comprehensive survey on the status quo of military theory teaching of the four general colleges and universities in Chongqing City. Then I analyze the teaching content, organization and implementation of teaching evaluation, teaching and teacher quality of it and pointed out the problems in all respects. After seriously thinking about these issues, I think which the main reasons are that general colleges and universities have a deviation on the understanding of military theory teaching, the implementation of relevant national policies in place, inadequate investment in the teaching funding of military theory, military theory courses teaching staff construction lagged far behind and so on.Accordingly,I put forward the effective countermeasures to improve the teaching of general military theory:firstly, general colleges and universities should correct and improve the understanding of military theory teaching; secondly, they should thoroughly implement the national policy on the teaching of military theory; thirdly, they should further increase the capital investment on the teaching of military theory; finally, they should strengthen the faculty construction of teachers.
