In the large-scale system of higher education in China, because of differences in resources allocation, objectively speaking, there is a "division of labor". Corresponding with the division of labor, each type of institutions needs have a clear understanding of their roles. It is in order to obtain the space of survival and development. Orientation of higher education institutes is not only related to the institutes own survival and development, but also the development of higher education nationwide. Today, in the increasingly fierce market competition, how can the higher education institutes make scientific orientation, create their own characteristic, develop themselves and serve local economy, There is no doubt that these questions attract the attention of our scholars. Therefore, the study on orientation of higher education institutes is a hot topic which has theoretical value and practical significance.Based on the theory study of definition, connotation and the links of the classification and orientation of general institutes of higher education, And then, from the school system, the degree awarded, the structure of subjects, the school functions and direction of personnel training, the service-orientation, the paper firstly proposes an overall conception on classification of general institutes of higher education in Jiangxi, and tries to construct a classification framework which is multi-dimensional crossover and combination to meet different purposes. Next, by analyzing the current situation of orientation of higher education institutes in Jiangxi and discussing their progress , the problems and influence factors, it provides a theoretical basis for rational thinking on orientation of higher education institutes of Jiangxi province. On the basis of the above, adopting the analysis of PEST and SWOT to analyze inside and outside environment of general institutes of Jiangxi province, the paper explores the growth strategy which is suitable for general institutes in Jiangxi. Finally, the paper surrounds the development target of different types of general institutes of higher education of Jiangxi province, puts forward some suggestions for the orientation of different kinds of general institutes, which is fit with the development process of culture, society and economy in Jiangxi province.
