Basketball is one important item of mass sports as well as a crucial area ofacademic studies of sports. It is of great significance for enriching the nationalfitness program, increasing national physical quality, and advancing the cause ofcompetitive basketball.Basketball thesis, the essence of school basketball education, reflects astudent’s overall academic ability, and is very important to the development ofbasketball as a subject and its researches. The selection of a proper topic helps to identify the critical problems ofappropriate difficulty so that a meaningful study could be completed within a certainperiod of time with a sensible and practical research method. However, afterreviewing all the MA theses that have been done on basketball, it is found that theirquality is uneven and there are universal and serious problems in their researchmethods and research orientation. An analysis was done on the topics of the MA theses about basketball educationthat have been done from2007to2012. Based on the principle of capturing thegeneral forms broadly and handling the small features specifically, through themethod of downloading, classifying, making files, counting and analyzing, theanalysis studies the theses’ research orientation, methods and contents. It admits theachievements that already exist and analyzes the problems through both horizontaland vertical comparisons, aiming to offer some helpful information to the academicstudies about sports and the development of the cause of basketball. Here are theconclusions:(1) In recent years, the topics of our country’s basketball MA theses are moreenriched and multiple, including not only traditional researches such as professionalsports, primary and middle school basketball education, and professional sport clubs, but also psychology, back-up talent cultivation and measurement.(2) The research methods mainly include literature review, questionnaire, content analysis and logic analysis. With a lot of methods about investigation andexperiments being employed and increasing integration of qualitative and quantitative studies being used more and more effectively, the quality and reliabilityof these theses have been improved greatly.(3) From the binary view of theory and practice, graduation theses shouldfocus on applied studies with certain proportion of theoretical researches.Nonetheless, theoretical researches have increased, and have integrated more withpractice so that they are able to serve the practice more specifically. Whereas, theystill have a long way to go before they become mature. The main problems of our country’s basketball MA theses are summarized asfollows: topics involve a large range but lack balance because repetition is toouniversal even though the number is rather high. The studies refer to many aspectsbut they are short of innovation and bright spot. The content covers many prospectsbut the research angles are sometimes not very appropriate. Research methods areintegrated well but some research stereotypes are formed and researchers areunwilling to boldly use new research methods. Statistical methods are quite simpleand superficial so that the data are not dug deeper enough.Theses format is not standard, and some characters are wrongly written, whichreflects a lack of seriousness. It is suggested that researchers and students shouldkeep learning, strengthen thinking ability, understand better about their subjectknowledge and broaden their knowledge about related areas. A system for assessingand stimulating academic researches as well as tutor system would better be built. What’s more, more fund should be invested in fundamental education’sinfrastructure, and school libraries’ collection of books should be enlarged andupdated more quickly so that researches’ need could be fulfilled.
