With the wider recognition of life-long learning and the development of moderncommunication and web technologies, the modern modal of talents’ training in openand distance education is developing rapidly around the whole world. One featurecharacterizing the difference between the open education and traditional education isthe openness. The concrete manifestation of the openness is the easiness of beingenrolled and difficulty of graduation. Therefore, one striking problem facing openinstitutions is the loss of students. Though open and distance education is welcomingleapfrog development, the accompanying high rate of loss of students does notreceive adequate attention.Based on the careful review of the theories and models of dropping out inhigher education home and abroad, the paper provides summaries of regular patterns,features and reasons of students’ dropping out in open and distance education inChina by taking into considerations of the current situations of the open and distanceeducation in our country on one hand. On the other hand, in view of the results of therelevant research both home and abroad, the paper, conducting a case study ofTianjin Radio and TV University, analyses the dropping out situation and reasons ofloss of students in Radio and TV University after three academic years. Thus, thepaper has theoretical and practical significances in enhancing the supporting ofstudents and improving retention.Based on the analysis of the loss of students in TJRTVU, the researchersummarizes the following reasons:the quality of individual students,environmentalelements,psychological elements,unscientific curriculum,the lack of coursecontent,Complaint about the quality,the lack of qualified teaching personnel andincomplete learning support service.And put forward some feasible countermeasures:Improve teachers’ quality,Strengthening curriculum design,To strengthen the education training offreshman,strengthening of psychological support and reinforcing the awareness ofservice, and establishing adequate system of student support and service.
