The Full-time Compulsory English Curriculum Standards for High Schools(Experimental Version)(short for “New Curriculum Standards”) issued by the ChineseMinistry of Education in July2001, stipulates that the general target of the Englishteaching in the period of basic education is to train the students’ comprehensive ability ofusing the language. For ten years, many scholars have done this investment in this field,but they didn’t get the same conclusion. So, what about the English CurriculumStandards implementation of Yan’an Standardized High School?In order to know about the the English Curriculum Standards implementation ofYan’an Standardized High School,the author investigated10high schools (account forabout60%of Yan’an Standardized High School) in the middle of June2013. On thebasis of provisions of the New Curriculum, the investigation adopted questionnaires,in-class observing,literature method, question-answer, etc. It discussed the problems andtheir solutions of the curriculum implementation in curriculum setting, teachingorganization, teaching concept, etcThe investigation mainly discussed the following three questions:(1) Do Yan’anStandardized High Schools strictly follow the New Curriculum Standards? If not, whatare the problems and how to improve them?(2) What are the curriculum settings of theschools? Are the organization and implementation of teaching in line with therequirements of the New Curriculum Standards?(3) What’s the teaching idea of Englishteacher of Yan’an Standardized High Schools? Does it conform to the requirements ofthe New Curriculum Standards?The investigation indicates that Yan’an Standardized High Schools’implementation of New Curriculum Standards is not very ideal, and did not achieve the desired effect. It is mainly manifested in: the teachers’ adaptation to the New CurriculumStandards, the usage of multimedia and basis for teaching evaluation, etc. do not conformto the requirements of the New Curriculum Standards; the teaching concept of teachersdoesn’t match that proposed by the New Curriculum Standards. The latter isoutstandingly embodied as: Yan’an English teachers are against the idea of the NewCurriculum Standards when it comes to the dominant role of student, the basis of theteaching goal, etc.; curriculum setting of most schools are unreasonable, and althoughalmost all schools have selective courses required by the New Curriculum Standards,they were not ideal for different reasons and did not achieve the desired effect. The aboveproblems have deep ideological and realistic root, and to solve these problems, the authorputs forward the corresponding solutions.This study can provide the basis for Yan’an administrative department to make thescientific decisions, help Yan’an standardized high school and other high schooleffectively implement the New Curriculum Standards, improve their execution, and lay afoundation for the improvement of English teaching quality of high school.
