Learning English is very important and very necessary. Therefore, during the middleschool English education, it is very important to cultivate the students’ Englishautonomous learning ability, especially in the countryside where English autonomouslearning ability is relatively weak.The study is based on the theory of English autonomous learning. I carried on thesurvey study to the students in Grade8of the four rural middle school in Nankan,Ganzhou City, Jiangxi province. It aims to do the research on the following questions.What are the conditions of rural junior students’ English autonomous learning? Whathave caused such conditions?What are the weak points of the English autonomouslearning ability in rural middle school students?Which aspects should we pay attention toin English autonomous learning?After investigation and research, the author thinks that the rural junior middle schoolstudents’ English autonomous learning ability is under the average level.The middleschool students are not good at English learning planning. They have no clear learningobjectives, especially long-term learning goals. They have problems in planning andmanaging their time. The ability of the effective use of learning strategies is low,especially the preview and review strategies. Middle school students seldom select after-school learning materials and activities. English autonomous learning ability in learningenvironment is low. For the rural junior school students, they lack independence onautonomous learning ability. To develop a strong willpower, teachers’ and parents’supervision and spur is needed.In the field of teaching theory, autonomous learning is regarded as a kind ofimportant teaching methods. In the field of learning theory, autonomous learning isregarded as an effective way of learning. It is realized that as a kind of learning ability.Autonomous learning is not only beneficial to improve the students learning results, butalso it is the foundation of lifelong learning and lifelong development.In theory, thisstudy can make autonomous learning field perfect. Teachers come to realize that theyshould pay more attention to training students’ English autonomous learning ability and help them form good habits to lay the foundation of the lifelong education. So thisresearch is of great theoretical significance and practical value.
