Assessment and evaluation play significant roles in English teaching.Educative evaluation constantly runs through the whole process in Englishclasses. However, due to the limitation of historical tradition as well asinfluences of various social factors and constraints, English teachingemphasizes on imparting knowledge while ignoring or despising developmentof competences just as other principles. Evaluation counts more on testingscores, with the one-sided evaluation method of teacher-centered mode.This thesis explores the application of incentive evaluation in senior highschool English teaching from theoretical and practical aspects, aiming to solvethree problems: analyzing current situation of the application of incentiveevaluation in senior high school English classes, summarizing effective modesof incentive evaluation, and raising strategies to improve effectiveness ofincentive evaluation at the base of action research. Therefore, key problems tobe solved are:(1) What is the present situation of incentive evaluation inEnglish classes of senior high school of Guizhou province?(2) How doesincentive evaluation have influences on students in English classes?(3) Whatis the strategy of making incentive evaluation more effective?This thesis sets a class of Shiqian Senior High School in Guizhouprovince as object, with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory, Postmodernism,and Multiple Intelligences Theory as theoretical framework of empiricalresearch. Before the data analysis, two times of tests and a questionnaire iscollected in natural condition. The process of experiment is focused onteachers’ strategies and skills of incentive evaluation. After the experiment,post test and a questionnaire are conducted. Through statistical analysis, fivedimensions, which are respectively students’ attitude towards English learning,students’ attitude towards English teacher, students’ strategy of Englishlearning, students’ English classroom presentation and students’ evaluationreflection, are made comparison in order to prove effectiveness of incentiveevaluation.Based on analysis of current inappropriate evaluation system in primaryand middle schools in China, while considering relevant research domesticallyand abroad, the author summarizes basic principles of incentive evaluation, therefore puts forward valid strategies and methods on the foundation ofempirical study, and expects to make improvement in the research of incentiveevaluation.
