Since the implementation of both all kinds of geographic learning and mind needto rely on different spatial elements, which is determined by the spatiality of geography,we should cultivating the geographic spatial ability of students in order to make studentslearn geography more successfully. Geographic spatial analysis ability is one of the keyfactors of geographic spatial ability. Cultivating geographic spatial analysis ability is akey approach to improve geographic spatial ability for students, while geographicspatial ability is the key ability of learning geography, thus cultivating geographicspatial analysis ability should be regarded as the important content in geographicinstruction. GIS has a great influence in cultivating the analysis ability. Therefore, usingGIS to design instruction project according to the feature of geographic instruction andthe way of acquiring knowledge of students, and using GIS to analyze spatial position,spatial distribution, spatial form, and spatial distance could improve the geographicspatial analysis ability of students. So we can make a conclusion that investigating howto use GIS to cultivating geographic spatial analysis ability is necessary.Firstly, I identified research aim through reading plenty theory references, which isusing GIS to cultivating the geographic spatial analysis ability of students. Then I alsoidentified the research methods, including documentary method and case study method.Then I defined some ideas related to geographic spatial analysis ability and made anintroduction of domestic and international research status.Secondly, this paper illustrates the method of using GIS map, making thematicmap, building buffer area, or layer superposition function could cultivating thegeographic spatial structure analysis ability, spatial comparative analysis ability, spatialcomprehensive analysis ability. Then based on the different application cases designedand developed for Gansu province, Qinghai province, and Xinjiang province, this paperstudies how to use GIS’s powerful map display, spatial research, spatial analysis, andvisualization function to cultivate geographic spatial analysis ability with specific cases.Thirdly, through studying application of GIS in cultivating geographic spatialanalysis ability of high school students, and analyzing the basic requirement for GIS instruction and learning of new curriculum standards of geography for senior highschools, this paper comes up some suggestions for the GIS-aid instruction in geographyin cultivating geographic spatial analysis ability of high school students based on thepresent research status.
