Human beings have always faced two major problems, one is the matter of survival, and theother is the development issue. The population problem is the critical factor related to the two issuesabove; today the world’s population has reached70million mainly distributed in developingcountries, which is a serious challenge to the carrying capacity of the earth. China has the mostpopulous country in the world, with a underdeveloped productivity, a large population, a weakeconomic foundation, a relative shortage of resources, which is the basic national condition ofChina. A new feature of the development of the Chinese population has taken on: the problem of thepopulation’s number, the quality of the population, the structure of the population and themovements of the population are intertwined together in the new era, which has affected andrestricted the sustainable development of China’s economy and society seriously. The report made bythe eighteenth meeting of the Communist Party of China National People’s Congress has proposed toachieve the grand goal of building a moderately prosperous society in2020. Therefore, the study ofthe relationship between demographic characteristics and the development of economy and society atthis stage is not only the need for the sustainable development of economy, society, resources andthe environment, but also the need to achieve full completion of the grand goal of a well-off societyin an all-round way.Firstly, this paper Study the relationship of the population change between economic andsocial development in Western countries and the ancient China on the historical perspective:demographic change and development are closely related to economic and social development, thepopulation is the Subject and the main promoters in the economic and social development, theircharacteristics of the population will affect or constrain the socio-economic development, and thelevel of economic and social development determines the change and the development characteristicsof population in turn. The focus of the article is the relationship of the demographic characteristics and economic andsocial development at this stage, including the impact on economic and social development of thepopulation made by the problems of the number of the population, the quality of the population, the structure of the population and the population movements. China’s population problem iscomplex and grim: a large population causes resource constraints, environmental pressure, the lowper capita income, irrational industrial structure and employment difficulties; labor quality is nothigh resulting in comprehensive national competitiveness is not strong; imbalance in the populationstructure causes serious aging problem and the high birth sex ratio; increasing floating population causes social management difficulties. If the population problems above are not resolved in a timelymanner, it will seriously affect the development and progress of China’s economy and society. Atpresent, China has entered the middle-income countries, with regard to our country if there is a"demographic dividend", whether the china can across the "middle income trap", China’sdevelopment will go from where are the hot spots of academic discussion. Authors believe thatChina can across the "middle income trap" at this stage; if our country can combine demographicdividend and bonus system, deepen economic reform and the transform the economic developmentmode. This paper gives us some countermeasures and suggestions to the problems of China’spopulation and economic and social development: improve the population quality, and activelyrespond to the aging population, control sex ratio at birth, deepening economic reform.Ourcountry will be able to achieve healthy and sustainable development of economy and society.
