In the era of knowledge economy, international business majors in vocational schools aresupposed to have professional capabilities as well as good oral communicative ability; however,students are not good at communicating with others, show little interest in class and take noinitiative in school while teachers don’t have a good command of class with low teachingefficiency. Not only students but also teachers should be responsible for the situation respectively.Vocational schools are normally occupation-oriented and their focus is mainly on professionalcourses rather than elementary courses, as a result, little attention is paid to the teaching of oralcommunication. Teachers’ educational idea and teaching methods cannot keep abreast of the timesso that students’ activities cannot be aroused. What’s more, oral communication is not a necessarytesting part in examinations. But as a matter of fact, students’ oral communication, which is of vitalimportance in modern society, should be taken into serious consideration.Based on the existing situation of vocational students’ oral communication ability as well asmy own teaching experience, this paper is aimed to explore the problems and countermeasuresfrom the following four perspectives.The first part focuses on the connotation, denotation and characteristics of oralcommunication.The second part stresses on the importance of oral communication teaching in the hope ofcultivating students’ optimism, harmonious interpersonal relations and good communicative skills.The third part lays emphasis on the analysis of the causes of students’ poor oralcommunication ability by a survey of its current situation and teachers’ teaching.The fourth part puts forward some effective measures to promote students’ oralcommunication ability by way of changing teaching ideas, class organization, teaching methodsand teaching assessment as well.
