Accumulation of Chinese knowledge needs to be realized by increased language teaching. Chinese language learning is not only a way to improve the ability of language and build knowledge composition, but also the process to mould values and promote language aesthetics. As for the modern Chinese textbooks, modern language reading always plays an unparalleled role in language-learning ability and cultivating all-round command of the language. Specifically, modern literature reading is a key point for the current middle-school education. Due to the importance of modern literature reading, tests of modern literature occupy a large proportion of high-school examinations, but it is the part graded the most severely. Consequently, modern literature reading becomes difficult to deal with for middle-school Chinese language teaching.Modern literature reading is not only meant to build appreciation for literary masterpieces, but also addresses students’ multi-ability and all-round education in areas such as cognitive ability, comprehension, critical thinking and cultural literacy. Most students’ comprehension in modern literature reading is not strong because of poor reading habits, lack of reading skills and inexperience with reading. In order to explore the reason for their poor reading, the passage combines some middle-school teaching experiences and a questionnaire about modern literature reading completed by Yanji No.4middle-school students. The questionnaire shows some problems existing with students’ reading ability, reading habits and reading interests. Some teaching suggestions are proposed for the purpose of upgrading the quality of the school’s reading curriculum by expanding reading variety and improving reading quality.Poor ability to read modern literature not only influences the students’ Chinese grades in middle school but also decreases the quality of students entering university as well. Thus to develop multi-ability and all-round education in areas such as cognitive ability, comprehension, critical thinking and cultural literacy, it is important to increase middle-school students’ability in modern literature reading. There are five parts in the thesis. The first part is the introduction discussing questions proposed as well as the study’s background, significance, methods and ideas. The second part details concept theory and accepted aesthetic theory, followed by a further exploration of the value of modern literature reading. The third chapter is the questionnaire about modern literature reading completed by Yanji No.4middle-school students. The questionnaire adopts a question-answer format and contains two parts. One part addresses the students’current attitudes towards modern literature reading, while the other part focuses on the research of the students’basic ability in modern literature reading. The fourth chapter uses the results of chapter three to analyze the existing problems of Yanji No.4middle-school’s students in modern literature reading. We find there are serious problems now owing to limited reading materials, less interest in reading, obstacles in cognition and comprehension, and even the negative influence of inferior reading materials. Due to the emergence of the stated problems, the thesis analyzes the problems in terms of social environment, teaching level and students’ future development. Finally, based on real situations, there are some proposals for teaching improvement in modern literature reading. First of all, there should be some changes in the approach to teaching by following the trend in modern times and catering to middle-school students’mental characteristics. Modern literature reading is often denoted as the important and difficult points in a middle-school Chinese language lesson plan. Consequently, lessons should be constructed using a student-oriented pedagogy not only for the purpose of testing success but also for the purpose of students’ all-round ability and long-run development. In other words, pride, inattention to students, and an undue emphasis on test results should be avoided in favor of teaching supported by democracy, balance and harmony between teachers and students. Then we can make the most of modern literature reading to promote students’ all-around personal ability based on the foundations which help students enlarge their reading range and increase reading quality and ability.
