As a basic language unit, word is one of the most important components in linguisticexpression. Words that students have grasped have an immediate impact on the developmentof their overall linguistic skills. Thus vocabulary teaching has long been a significant part ofsenior middle school English teaching activities. Researches concerning computer assistedteaching in the field of second language acquisition spring up in recent years. Aiming forimproving the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching and learning in senior middle school, thisresearch focuses on the application of computer assisted vocabulary teaching and theanalyzation of its function for enhancing student’s acquisition of vocabulary as well ascomprehensive language skills.Computer assisted vocabulary teaching attracted the attention of a vast number ofeducators along with the extensive development of information technology. It providesauthentic texts, images, audio and video materials and other forms of educational resourcesfor teaching. Being able to get immediate feedbacks of learning, it enables students to studyindependently. However, researches show that students become accustomed to the mode oftraditional teaching after nine years’ compulsory education, by which teachers exercise theduty of organizing, planning and evaluating in the whole process of learning. So it isimperative to seek for a practical way to improve teaching and independent learning.This research is intended to search for an appropriate vocabulary teaching mode for theintermediate-level students, for their adjustments to the transformation of traditional learningapproach to active, explorative and cooperative ones. The experiment is conducted onstudents in natural classes in the Xuchang No.2Senior High School and is trying to testify theperformance and feasibility of computer assisted senior middle school vocabulary teaching. The main research methods used in this thesis are literature review, questionnaire survey,interview, analysis of data and teaching experiment.This thesis is composed of six chapters. The first chapter introduces research background,significance and objectives of the research and the structure of this thesis. The second chaptercovers the development of computer assisted language and vocabulary teaching. Somecommon devices of computer assisted language teaching are listed afterwards. In the last partof this chapter, the author summarized previous studies on computer assisted vocabularyteaching at home and abroad. Main content of the third chapter is the theoretical framework ofthis research constructivism. In chapter four, the author presented the objective, participantsand procedure of this research in detail. The fifth chapter is the analysis and discussion towardthe results of computer assisted senior middle school vocabulary teaching. Then, the authorsummarized the implications of computer assisted vocabulary teaching for teaching andlearning. In the last part of this thesis, the author summarizes this thesis and point out thelimitation and put forward some suggestions for further study. It is pointed out that computerassisted language teaching is a useful supporting means and developing trend for future seniormiddle school English teaching.The results of the experiment show that computer assisted teaching is a practical andscientific approach. It stimulates the development of initiative learning and promotesteacher’s professional growth. However, there are some inadequacies that need to be refinedand ameliorated in future studies. Efforts should be made to push forward the researchconducted on computer assisted vocabulary teaching.
