New English Curriculum Standard proposes new concept and stipulates newrequirements for the elementary English education. This indicates that the reformation of thefundamental education enters a brand new historical stage. In order to realize the objectivespecified in the education policy, education reform should be based on the requirements of alleducators and long-term development of society, face all students and pay more attention tocultivating students’ self-studying ability and self-developing ability to facilitate the students’overall development. The main aim of education reform in china is the realization ofsubjective teaching, while the core and soul of education reform is to develop the subjectiveteaching, respect and cultivate students’ subjectivity. Subjectivity refers to the functionalcharacteristics of a subject, which can be displayed in the interactive activity with the object.New teaching material and new English Curriculum Standard establish the newstudent-oriented teaching model by means of the task-based teaching method, and cultivatestudents’ subjectivity so as to achieve the subjective teaching in English class.Based on the four aspects, namely, autonomy, selectivity, initiative and creativity aboutstudents’ subjectivity, this research manages to investigate the present situation of thedevelopment of subjective teaching in English class of senior high schools, and discloses theproblems in the development of subjective teaching in English class of senior high schools.The investigation has two parts, the questionnaire and the interview. It was carried out in No.2Senior High School in Xuchang, Henan Province. The subjects of the questionnaire were200students randomly selected from second-year in this senior high school. In order to obtaindata, the questionnaire asked the students to respond to20items about the present situation ofthe development of subjective teaching in English class of senior high schools. At the same time, there were9English teachers in this school also taking part in the interview. They wereinterviewed about their classroom teaching methods that were frequently used. All the dataare collected, summarized and analyzed. The data were put into the computer and calculatedstrictly in percentage terms. Data analysis indicates that the development of subjectiveteaching in English class of senior high school is not optimistic. In the course of teaching,there exist some problems like the biased cognition about education value, the absoluteauthority of teachers, students’ weak subject ability and limitations of class teaching activities.According to the study above, this paper gives the suggestions for promoting subjectiveteaching in English class of senior high school. In order to offer favorable conditions for thedevelopment of subjective teaching in English class, teachers are required to develop students’independent learning ability and flexible learning strategies, abandon traditional teachingvalue and cultivate subjective teaching concept, as well as innovate teaching model in theteaching process. This paper summarizes the principles of full participation, level, initiative,democracy and activity which are used to cultivate the subjectivity of students in the teachingprocess.
