This study uses a combined approach of quantitative and qualitative research to explore the general motivation, learning strategies and other related aspects of foreign Chinese learners receiving the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship during their preparatory education, based on the questionnaire research and interviews on the success of the Chinese learners. Tracking their learning trajectory through research, interviews and data recording, we make relevant recommendations regarding Teaching Chinese as a Second language aimed at preparatory education. Overall, the paper is divided into three parts:an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The first chapter is the introduction of this paper, mainly explaining the significance of this research as well as the current status of research into related content. The latter introduces the current status of research from two perspectives:research summarizing the status of preparatory Chinese education and research related to learning motivation and strategies in second language learning. In an investigation of previous studies, we found problems and points, necessitating the need to further explore the correlation between motivation and learning strategies. The second chapter focuses on the specific design of the questionnaire. It mainly includes:The raising and resolving of questions throughout the design process, the design, the subjects studied, research tools used, the structure and validation of the motivation and learning strategies questionnaire, statistics and data processing. The third chapter of this thesis focuses primarily on learning motivation, learning strategies and the results and analysis of the correlation between them. It includes the analysis of the investigation and summarizes the findings of the survey into the correlation between students learning strategies and motivation of preparatory Chinese learners. The fourth chapter includes case studies on a beginner, an intermediate and an advanced learner of different nationalities, all preparatory students with outstanding marks. The fifth chapter deals with the implications of the results achieved in regards to Teaching Chinese to learners at preparatory level, considering mainly two perspectives:Stimulating motivation and developing learning strategies in students, thus putting forward suggestions for teaching students at the preparatory level. The sixth chapter is the conclusion.
