Physics teaching stresses the cultivation of students’scientific literacy under the background of quality education while physical model is one of the effective ways of teaching. The practice of Physical-model teaching can enrich students’ problem-solving experience and help improve their modeling capabilities so as to optimize students’ thinking quality in physics. This paper is divided into three parts. The first part is the theory of the physical modeling and the general introduction to the research on developing modeling ability. On the basis of six dimensions of observation standards on which to diagnose students’ modeling capacity, Part Ⅱ analyses200samples of students’ answer sheets concerning their answers to Question14in the physics college entrance examination of Jiangsu, and the modeling capabilities of the students was diagnosed. It is found that students’ ability to modeling in the province is not strong, average at an acceptable level. Furthermore an analysis of the factors affecting students’modeling capability is conducted. The third part is the practical exploration about how to enhance students’ modeling capabilities in high school physics teaching. On the one hand, taking the unit of the description of the movement for example, the overall design of modeling teaching is made and preliminary teaching practice is carried out; on the other hand, the exploration based on physical problem-solving approach is discussed. Upon proposing strategies to enhance students’ modeling ability, the overall system design of teaching is made with regard to the connection problems as an example. Finally, qualitative evaluation of the research is conducted so as to make summary and reflection.
