No matter how thoroughly arranged a class is, some unexpected situations would be inevitable.Teachers and students may disagree with each other on some basic values such as how to evaluate thesignificance of something and how to weigh gains and losses. They intend to exert influence on thecounterpart to reach their own purpose. Such interactions define conflicts of values between teachers andstudents. Conflicts of values between teachers and students not only impact routine teaching orders but alsomay curb the development of students’ personalities. Meanwhile, these unexpected conflicts can hardly behandled by teachers immediately due to the suddenness. Therefore, it is a hard issue for teachers to dealwith conflicts of values in class. Because of the importance of conflicts of values, this thesis tries to explorethe characteristics, causes and solutions of conflicts of values in class. The thesis conducted a literature review about the research progress in conflicts of valuesbetween teachers and students both in and beyond China. Accordingly, the conflicts of values betweenteachers and students were found to be unexpected, destructive and constructive. Conflicts of valuesbetween teachers and students can be categorized into conflicts between traditional values and modernvalues, between unitary values and multi-values, and between method-oriented values and purpose-orientedvalues. Based on researches on two cases, this thesis points out that social reforms and multi-cultures arethe external factors of conflicts of values between teachers and students while differences in attitudes, stands, purposes and thinking patterns are the direct causes. At the end of this thesis, it is proposed that afree and democratic atmosphere should be fostered to effectively solve the conflicts of values betweenteachers and students. Teachers should put themselves in the students’ shoes to understand them and stayobjective or neutral when judging values. As solutions for conflicts of values, teachers can adoptcircumventing strategy to deal with unexpected cases, values judgment strategy to realize the gaps ofvalues cognition between teachers and students, values clarification strategy to clarify reasonable andunreasonable factors in conflicting cases, consultation and dialogue strategy to seek common ground andeliminate disputes, and active instructing strategy to facilitate values progress of students.
