Abstract:University reputation is the general judgment, opinions or beliefs that people have about a specific college or university’s overall quality or characteristics. University reputation is often used as an evaluable index in many influential world university rankings. A university’s reputation and its ranking position are positively correlated.Undoubtfully, the University of Tokyo university belongs to the world class university, and it is of great impressiveness as an asia university among those top Europe and American unviersities in the ranking list. In this study, the University of Tokyo, as an example is analyzed. The core elements of University reputation include: characteristic teaching, academic research citations, industry revenue, and internationalization. They embody the benefit of students, teachers, researchers within the university; they embody the social and economic requirements of the University’s output outside the university; they also embody the requirements of the university itself in the global and knowledge-based economy while in the process of internationalization.The way of University reputation formation mechanism include: peer recognition, media communication, employers propagation as well as outstanding achievements effects in scientific output. The University of Tokyo has accumulated and formed a good reputation. The university’s reputation shall be maintained and managed. Cultivation model for talented students shall be consolidated; the high quality of research management shall be prefered; research outputs shall be turned into application and transformation; sustainable development of internationalization shall be promoted.Good university reputation, once formed, will play an active role to the development of the university conversely. First, it is conducive to the introduction of first-class talents, facilitate international exchange of diverse talents, so that outstanding students and teachers can ensure high quality of personnel training starting point. Secondly, the society will nurture back the university, which mainly refers to the nurturing of academic development, personnel cultivation, as well as of economic and brand. Thirdly, it is conducive to establishing public-oriented concept of world class university, thus forming some basic consensus and promote the development of education throughout the virtuous circle.
