With the deepening of the reform of China’s higher education system, high school tuition has been growing in recent years, which results in an increasing percentage of poor students. Those students majoring in science and engineering, a main part of young college students, have great influence upon the development of national science and technology. In addition, the poor students majoring in science and engineering have quite different personality and psychological characteristics. The troubles on emotion, mentality, capability, study and job, which are caused by economic hardship, put a brake on development and success for poor students, and also could be a source of instability on college or society. In order to solve the problems about their healthy development, it has become imperative to get a deep look on psychological characteristics of poor students and strengthen the ideological and political education on them.The poor students majoring in science and engineering is the research subjects in this paper. We put out up to1000investigating questionnaires in4high schools in Wuhan, and receive958available questionnaires. Based on our investigating results, we analyze the problems of ideological and political education on poor students majoring in science and engineering. Also, by utilizing pedagogy, psychology and sociology knowledge, we try to find out the cause of these problems and discuss the measures to strengthen the ideological and political education.This thesis is divided into five chapters. In chapter1and2, the background of the ideological and political education for poor students is presented, and the domestic and international situation about this issue is summarized. Psychological characteristics of poor students and the research significance on this issue is also presented in this chapter. In chapter3and4, the process and result of a well‐designed investigation scheme is shown. The investigation result shows the particularity of this special group, and reveal the existed problem in the early work on the ideological and political education for poor students. The underlying cause is deeply analyzed in the end of this chapter. In chapter5, systematic measures and methods on the ideological and political education for poor students are proposed, including clarifying the concrete content of the ideological and political education, pushing forward on mental health education for poor students, and applying innovative methods for the ideological and political education.
