The development of international communication has called for the necessity ofEnglish study. As Chinese citizens, we have to learn English well in order to adaptourselves to the demand and challenge under international circumstances. Since thefall of2004, the New Curriculum Standard issued by the Education Ministry has beencarried out. Recently, what has troubled junior high school teachers on the front is asfollows: How much does first language affect English teachers’ teaching? How muchdo English teachers make use of the appropriate usage of Chinese in the three stagesof teaching? According to the children’s cognitive characteristics, what facilitatingmechanism influenced by language transfer promotes English learning.This thesis mainly focuses on the appropriate usage of Chinese influenced by thepositive transfer of first language that can not be neglected and also those popularfacilitating mechanisms advanced by massive junior high school students and teachers.In the process of junior high school English study, the appropriate usage of Chinese isplaying an indispensible role. Firstly, it is closely related with the presentation,practice and production in the general teaching process. If we regard first language asa bridge and the opposite side is English, then teachers will act like the guide becausewe will not successfully get over the bridge without the help of the guide. Secondly,junior high school teachers should try to conclude the facilitating mechanismsinfluenced by positive transfer of Chinese such as chant, proverb, cultural awarenessteaching, role play and games combined with second language acquisition theories,positive transfer theories and children’s cognitive theories. Furthermore, theseeffective promoting mechanisms should be applied in due course in order to makestudents more confident and skillful when learning English.This research is conducted in the instruments of questionnaire, interview, test andclassroom observation. Firstly, three classes of Junior One from No.5Middle Schoolof Chengyang District in Qingdao are investigated through questionnaire in the wayof random survey ranging from34,33to33students. Then, six English teachers fromthe same school are also interviewed in order to verify the power of appropriate usageof Chinese influenced by the positive transfer and some popular teaching forms andeffective learning strategies. In the course of exploring junior high school Englishstudy, researcher has concluded the proverb, cultural awareness teaching, and roleplay, so on and so forth through related theories like positive transfer theory and second language acquisition theory. The researcher also comes down to the chant andgames combined with children’s cognitive theories. Finally, these facilitatingmechanisms are applied to the two classes mentioned above as a comparative test andthe test results have proved that the experimental class’ scores are better than thecontrol class’ scores. Therefore, those facilitating mechanisms influenced by theappropriate usage of Chinese are verified to be effective and they promote students’development and make them willing to learn the language.
