With the advent of mass higher education, young faculty becomes the main force in theuniversities and colleges, carrying on the tasks of teaching and research. Young faculty whowas born in1970s or1980s is in the initial stage of professional development. The youngfaculty’s teaching ability is related closely with the development of Chinese higher educationand the cultivation of innovative talents.By adopting the method of quantitative approach, a questionnaire is conducted with104teachers under the age of40in3universities who are carrying on the teaching mainly forundergraduate students to collect data. At the same time, depth interviews have been conductedwith some administrators in universities, teaching supervision experts and university students.This study includes the following three parts.Part one: The status quo of young faculty’s teaching ability. It is recognized widely that thereare deficiencies of the teaching ability of the young faculty, including lack of knowledges ofeducation and teaching, out-of-date ideas about education, misunderstanding of the role ofteacher and incompetence of instructional design. The young faculty pays little attention tostudents’ learning and teaching research.Part two: analysis of the factors influencing young faculty’s teaching ability. According to thequestionnaire survey, young faculty hasn’t attach paramount importance to teaching. Theexisting training system can’t satisfy with the need of improving young faculty’s teaching ability.Furthermore, the teaching quality monitoring system can’t motivate the young faculty’sinteresting in classroom teaching and teaching research.Part three: the strategy of promoting young faculty’s teaching ability. In light of the theory ofstaff development and scholarship of teaching, young faculty should renew conceptions ofeducation and pay much more attention to teaching and teaching research. In order to enrichyoung faculty’s knowledge of education and to improve their teaching ability, the universitiesshould build effective training system, establish rational evaluating and appraising system andscientific teaching monitoring system.
