In recent years, as higher education institutions upscale the size their student bodies, higher education started to to shift from elite education to mass affluent education. Many worrisome issues emerged in teaching atmosphere, research morality, and study atmosphere. It has become essential for the further improvement of our higher education system to strengthen academic atmosphere building. As such.we should take advantage of any possible measures to analyze, improve and strengthen academic atmosphere building. Yet academic atmosphere building is a complex systematic project, the movement type is far from enough. We need to establish a long-term, comprehensive plan and implement the plan accordingly. Academic atmosphere evaluation is such an effective measure to evaluate academic atmosphere, pinpoint issues and determine means of improvement. Besides the traditional ways such as teach-in sessions, quantitative evaluations on the academic atmosphere of colleges or institutions are essential parts of of establishing a well-run mechanism. Currently, domestic scholars have been focused on qualitative and descriptive study and evaluation, but have been ignorant about study on academic atmosphere evaluation index system.This study aims at constructing an appropriate academic atmosphere evaluation index system and supplementary fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model in order to evaluate academic atmosphere of higher education institutions. First of all, the study includes a comprehensive summary about key definitions of academic atmosphere relying on both domestic and foreign studies. Based on moral education theory, education management theory and comprehensive evaluation theory, this study set the definitions of the three key concepts-academic atmosphere, academic atmosphere building and academic atmosphere evaluation. Secondly, the study also includes a summary on the quality of academic atmosphere and advanced experiences of preeminent foreign higher education institutions such as Harvard and Oxford, based on which this study set forth the four key factors of the evaluation on academic atmosphere of higher education institutions. Following index designing principles, the study constructs an academic atmosphere evaluation index system and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model by taking advantage of AHP to calculate the weight of different indicators. And the study takes T college of Southwest Jiaotong University as an example to demonstrate the evaluation process and to test the practicality and scientificity. The result shows:T college scored 86.7, classified as "good" in terms of academic atmosphere, indicating the overall quality of academic atmosphere of T college is good, yet with room to improve. Finally, the study comes to a conclusion, which could be references for the academic atmosphere building of Southwest Jiaotong University or even other higher education institutions.Atmosphere building of Southwest Jiaotong University or even other higher education institutions.
