Teachers play an important role in the organization and practice of group activities. The teachers’role is one of the most important factors that influence the effectiveness of group activities as well. Teachers can also regulate group activities by affecting the other factors. Focusing on teachers’ roles in group activities opens a new perspective for exploring the effectiveness of group activities.Based on the theoretical role of teachers, this article examines teachers’ roles in group activities for Beginning Chinese class in role behavior and role awareness. By comparatively analyzing the relationship between teachers’ role behavior and role awareness, this study research teachers’ roles from multiple dimensions.Firstly, the study has done literature review on research in group activities from second language instruction field and summed up a framework for teachers’roles, role functions and role behavior in group activities.In this study, classroom observation and stimulative recall techniques were used to collect instruction behavior in group activities. Through coding and classifying instruction behaviors data, this study examines teachers’role behavior and its effects during pre-, while-, and after- group activities.On the basis of teachers’ role expectations and role behavior, this research investigates teachers’ role awareness in group activities for beginning Chinese class.Based on the analysis of role behavior and role awareness, this research compares teachers’ role behavior and role awareness. The results demonstrate that teachers’ role awareness is basically consistent with role behavior. However, the inconsistency between role awareness and instructions happens. Many role behaviors do not effectively fulfill role expectations.This study has detailed analysis of the causes of low-/in-effective instructions and inconsistency of teachers’ role and role behavior. The finding proves that teachers have inaccurate understanding of group activities, and fail to recognize their roles in the group activities from theories. This study provides references for teachers to properly understand their roles in group activities.
