Nowadays, emphasis on English teaching has been shifted from how to teach to how to learn, from teaching results to learning processes, from mechanical drills to developing the comprehension acquision and application of knowledge. That is to say, students play active roles in learning, and what the teachers should do is to promote autonomous learning inside and outside the classroom so that students will develop successfully in the future. As we all know, English is an important international language. It is necessary for new junior school students to learn English, to acquire linguistic knowledge and develop language competence. But the learning environment at junior schools is not so satisfying. Some students do not learn English well in primary schools, and they get bored with English learning. Teachers often find their work difficult. How can we solve the problems? This paper is to focus on cultivating autonomous learning. The concept of "autonomous learning"stemmed from the issues about the development of life-long learning skills and the development of independent thinkers in the 1960s. Heloc defined "autonomy" as "the ability to take care of one's own learning".Autonomous learning is an essential approach to language learning. It is individualized and its ultimate goal is the moving of learners from dependence on teachers in study towards autonomy in study.Education is not only the filling of a vessel, but the kindling of a flame. Reviewing the theories of autonomous learning and constructivism, this paper tries to put some related theories into practice in helping students develop autonomous learning strategies in learning English in junior schools. Under the teachers' guidance, the students initiated by their interests and positive motivation, are subjectively willing to learn English and assuming more responsibility in the learning process. And objectively they are able to learn English successfully, by developing the autonomous learning strategies they need for the accquisition of linguistic language and skills. Promoting students' autonomy in learning makes a prime for the life-long education and for their sustainable development. Which is certainly one of teachers' inevitable responsibilities. Learner autonomy in learning is the ultimate goal of English teaching and is an effective way to improve the efficiency of teaching and learning.
