Following various structural reforms in universities, administrative support’s socializing reforms including unitizing, standardizing and systematizing the administration and construction of undergraduate residence, have been launched. Among all the reforms, undergraduate residence’ educational function has drawn an increasing attention. This dissertation focuses on the special and microcosmic field, the undergraduate residence, and especially targets at its educational function. It will creatively analyze the link between the undergraduate residence, an important base for educating university students ideologically and politically, and the educational function.The study is expected to theoretically expand the ideological and political education in universities and researches on campus cultures, promote the development of the ideological and political education in universities and studies on environment theories of moral education, and hence enrich theories on campus culture and also those related to university students’ ideological and political education. In practice it aims to provide specific countermeasures to the construction of university campus culture and thereby enhance the ideological and political education in undergraduate residence as a new ground for the former.Firstly, this study, based on the Environment Theories of the Ideological and Political Education of Marxism, A.C Makapehko’s Collectivism Education Theory and soft management, define undergraduate residence and their educating function. After analyzing collected data, it is detected that the educating function is characterized by providing humane service in existing material conditions, scientific management in system building and diverse cultural education in cultural development. And then it speculatively researches the function from four perspectives including direction function, restrictive function, edificating function and innovative function.Secondly, this dissertation explores factors influencing the educating function of undergraduate residence. After an analysis of data from individual characteristics, residence and social factors, it is discovered that, among all individual characters, grade, age, major, degree of satisfaction with their living condition and personal attitudes towards management system all have an effect on the educational function of undergraduate residence; among all residence factors, students’ number in accommodation, room rent, sanitary conditions, self-regulatory system and study atmosphere of the residence can affect the educational function of undergraduate residence; social political system, economy and culture, included in social factors, are noticed to exert influences on the educational function.Finally it summarizes the main problems existing in present undergraduate residence and accordingly gives countermeasures. Problems chiefly lie in poor material conditions yet to be optimized, inadequate management systems and lack of cultural atmosphere. Based on an empirical investigation, it proposes effective methods to improve the educating function of undergraduate residence, such as to strengthen the residence construction build sound residence management and reinforce cultural construction.
