Nowadays, vocabulary has become one of stumbling blocks in English learning, especially for the beginners. Therefore, it is necessary for us to research an effective vocabulary learning method. Learning plan teaching method was firstly put forward in China in the 1990s; it aims to develop students’ self-learning and cooperative learning ability under instructions’ essential guidance. It is a learning process during which a learning proposal based on the contents of the teaching material and students’ background that includes their cognitive style, academic level, and motivation status. Learning plan teaching method is based on the autonomous learning, constructivism and humanistic theory. At the moment, for purpose of improving the students’ ability of autonomous learning, a lot of kinds of learning plan are popular in many places of our country.The author applies the learning plan teaching method to English vocabulary teaching and tries to investigate three questions:1. What is students’ attitude towards guided learning plan teaching model?2. Can the guided learning plan teaching model promote the students’ autonomous ability in English vocabulary learning?3. Does the guided learning plan teaching model improve the students’ vocabulary proficiency?In order to find the answers to these research questions, the author took an experiment from September 2014 to January 2015 which lasted for one semester. The 92 participants were from Class 11 and Class 12 in Grade Two in Fuxin Senior High School in Liaoning Province. The two classes shared the same teacher and they used the same textbooks. The only difference between the two classes is that they were exposed to different teaching models. The experimental class uses guided learning plan teaching model while the control class uses traditional teaching model.It can be found that the students’ attitude to vocabulary teaching in senior high school by guided learning plans is positive. It also indicates that the learning plan teaching mode can promote the students’ autonomous ability in English vocabulary learning. The guided learning plan teaching method can also improve the students’ vocabulary proficiency.
