As an important carrier of popular science, off-campus education base plays a significant role in pre-college students on agricultural science popularization and education. In order to develop new ideas and new methods to carry out agricultural popular science activities at the off-campus education bases, this paper analyzed the current situation of pre-college students’ agricultural science popularization and education, conducted questionnaires and interviews for teachers and student who participated in the bases, performed on-site researches, and implemented the re-designed lectures. Through steps above, the paper proposed an agricultural popular science educational model – students as the focus, interact by objects display and hand-on experience. The main results are as follows:1. The questionnaires showed that the 80% of urban high school students had little country experience while the lack of country experience among elementary school students is as high as 95%. It means that urban teenagers have neither agriculture nor agricultural ecology knowledge. In addition, 82% of the urban high school students and 93% of the urban elementary school students are interested in learning basic agriculture and agricultural science, and 96% of the urban high school students and 95% of the urban elementary school students said that they are willing to engage in the off-campus education bases activities. The survey also showed that younger-aged students prefer on-the-spot learning and experiential learning while elder-aged students prefer a wider range of learning forms, including online learning and communicational learning.2. The study suggested that agricultural popular science and education at off-campus education bases could be divided into three stages, namely, the acquainting and understanding stage, practicing and experience learning stage, and improved learning stage. These three stages combine theoretical study with practices, so that students can get deeper understanding of agriculture and agriculture science knowledge by various activities.3. The study designed the classes with lectures, on-the-field studies, guest speakers and discussion forms, for students to understand more about agriculture and agricultural science. The teaching is implementing with well-planned syllabus and varies in-class activities, for students to gain more appreciation on the richness of agriculture.4. An agricultural popular science and educational model was proposed– students as the focus, with the scene demonstration, the experience, and interacted by objects display and hand-on experience. The responsibility of education lies both in in-class and after-school as well as the whole society. The "School- Base- Home" model is a very important channel to spread scientific knowledge of teenagers, and also a good supplement of school due to the lack of science education resources in school. This paper studied both theoretical and practical aspect and accordingly proposed the student focus model, searched the scene demonstration, the experience, and interacted by objects display and hand-on experience. The results were hoped to serve a better foundation for Off-campus Education Base in Guangzhou Yuexiu District on agricultural popular science and education, to provide guidance for other after-school educational sites on agricultural ecology science education, as well as to enrich referencing sources for off-campus education base on agricultural popular science.
