Gender role is in the process of socialization of individuals through a gender appropriate behavior with their imitation obtained norms, reflecting the social and cultural expectations of appropriate behavior for men and women. It’s also a reflection of the individual personality traits. With the development of implicit social cognition, self- esteem is divided into implicit and explicit self-esteem. Implicit self-esteem refers to individuals with the self- related or not to the evaluation, which is not recognized by the introspection( or not correctly identify) effect of a selfattitude. Explicit self-esteem is the self-evaluation of individual feeling and the self-attitude. Adaptation is a process that an individual achieves the status of balance and harmony after interaction with the environment. In this study, all subjects were college students. The questionnaires(SCRI-50 & CCSAS) and laboratory(SC-IAT) were used to investigate gender role, self-esteem and adaptation status of college students. In order to deeply study the relationship among different types of gender roles, implicit and explicit self-esteem, adaptation status of college students. The whole study is divided into two parts. Study I: applying overall stratified sampling method, the study is applied in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, with participants of full-time four-year college undergraduate students in three years to invest their gender role and adaption, 600 questionnaires were distributed and 564 valid ones were returned. Study II: 170 students of four gender roles were selected out from study I to be tested of implicit self-esteem by program and explicit self-esteem by Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale to invest the relation between the two variables. The relation between gender role, self-esteem and adaption were thus invested. The main conclusions are:(1) The distribution of gender roles in descending order is androgynous, undifferentiated, feminine and masculine. Students of different types of gender roles in the gender distribution, student office or not, only child or not, there is significant difference.(2) The overall situation of adaption is at the middle level. At grade, specialty, place of residence, only child or not, student office or not, there are significant differences exist on the student.(3) There are significant differences among different types of gender roles in interpersonal adaptation, learning adaptation, adaptation of campus life, career adaptation, emotional adaptation, self- adaptation, life satisfaction and overall adaptation status.(4) There are connections gender roles and adaptation. Androgyny is positively connected with adapt to the overall situation and seven dimensions; undifferentiated is negatively connected with adapt to the overall situation and seven dimensions; masculine is positively connected with interpersonal adaptation, self- adaptation to the presence; feminine is negatively connected with interpersonal adaptation, self-adaptation to the presence.(5)Gender Roles of college students can predict adaptation status.(6) Explicit Self-Esteem is in the middle level. There are significant differences among different types of gender roles on self-esteem; SC-IAT is effectively to test implicit self-esteem. There are no differences among gender roles on implicit self-esteem; implicit self-esteem and self-esteem are relatively independent two structures.(7) There are significant differences among gender roles exist in self-esteem separation index. The self-esteem consistency of androgyny and masculine is significantly higher than that of undifferentiated college students. There is a connection among self-esteem separate indicator, adaptation status and gender role. Students with higher degree of consistency implicitly and explicitly self-esteem have adaptation status. Androgynous students with high degree of consistency implicitly and explicitly self-esteem have better life in college.(8) Explicit self-esteem has a mediating role between the gender role and adaptation status of college students.
