New basic educational curriculum reform promotes the reform of textbooks. How to arrange the content of textbooks, how textbooks adapt to the idea of the curriculum and course objectives, and how to take advantages of textbooks become teachers’and specialists’issues of concern. The image system as a component of textbooks, a carrier of information and a tool to assist teaching, plays an important role in teaching. Therefore, survey and analyze on the current situation of illustration-teaching, well knowledge of new image system characteristics and their relevance to curriculum standard, and exploration for the illustration-teaching strategies could help reach of teaching goals, significantly promoting the development of teachers and students as well.This paper consists of six parts. The first part discussed the research background, status and the main research methods, at the same time, basic concepts of image system and teaching strategies as well as theoretical basis of illustration-teaching.Part Ⅱ Qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed image system’s characteristics of new junior high school biology textbook (2012edition), and identified with advanced image system of the new textbook, which conforms to the new idea of curriculum, and embodies objectives of the new curriculum.The third part of this paper is a comprehensive investigation and analysis for a situation of illustration-teaching in Changsha. The investigation mainly includes three aspects, namely, how image systems of new teaching materials affects junior high school students’ learning interest, how illustration-teaching affects students’performance, as well as the illustration-teaching status. The results indicate that the image system of the new textbook plays an important role in stimulating students’ interest in learning biology. In illustration-teaching, not only students’interests but also the characteristics, methods and strategies of the illustration-teaching should be taken into consideration. Rational and efficient use of illustrations for teaching plays an important role in several aspects, which are inspiring students’interest in learning, helping students to comprehend and memorize knowledge, improving students’abilities of reading, analysis, drawing pictures, and fostering awareness of using pictures.Part IV is the focus of this article. On the basis of the three parts, part four proposed strategies of selection, presentation, instruction and supporting review in illustration-teaching, which have a guiding significance for front-line teachers in illustration-teaching.Teaching case is designed based on the proposed illustration teaching strategies in part v. And by analyzing the case, And by analyzing the case, instructional strategies were adequately illustrated in teaching applications.Part VI discussed the basic conclusions of this paper, and made specific recommendations for teachers in illustration-teaching. Finally, limitations and the forecast of this study are also in discussion.
