Under the boost of the technical reform of the 21 st century, computers and information technology have deepened into educational field, providing a new tool for teaching. Computer-assisted Instruction(CAI) is an inevitable outcome of the new age, whose advantages so obvious that almost all educators at home and abroad advocate it. However, in practical field, how to properly make full use of multi-media to effectively assist teaching has become a hot and core topic in the domestic and foreign research of education and teaching.In the thesis, from the perspective of constructivism, the author first do the applied research about Chengdu No.7 High school’s computer assisted English teaching, with the method of questionnaire survey from six aspects. They include the frequency of using multimedia and teachers and students’ satisfaction degree towards it, the analysis of multimedia’s auxiliary function to English teaching, the situation of students’ independent exploration and cooperative communication in CAI class, the situation of multimedia’s pluralistic using, the situation of how teachers make use of multimedia to create a real learning environment related to real life and the situation of teachers’ taking advantage of multimedia to develop students’ autonomous learning ability.Then, the author continues the applied research by the means of class observation, analysis of typical classes and interview. According to the study, the author analyzes the positive and negative aspects of the practical using of multi-media in the school’s English teaching. Last,the writer offers five strategies and suggestions to perfect the ways of how to take advantage of multimedia based on the theory of constructivism. The five aspects are as follows.First, balance the relationship of multi-media assisted English teaching and traditional ways. Second, keep the pace of the time and diversify the ways of multi-media assisted English teaching. Third, take advantage of multimedia technology to develop students’ autonomous learning ability. Fourth, take advantage of multi-media to construct real learning circumstances, promoting communication and cooperation. Fifth, people-oriented, strengthen the students’ core status.
