Research On The Construction Of World-class University Of Earth Science

International competition is ultimately a competition of innovative talents,highereducation as the source of knowledge progress and the cradle of innovation talenttraining, its strength is a symbol of the country’s comprehensive competitiveness, socountries have set off a wave of building the world-class university. In the study ofworld-class university,scholars pay more attention to the top of world-class university,however, in recent years, the rapid rise of a number of small but excellent collegesprovides us a fresh idea to build World-class Universities. The Colorado School ofMines, with its distinguished schooling features, has a unique position in highereducation domain in American even in the world. Undoubtedly, to study itcan provide us some inspiration for construction of World-class University of EarthScience.This paper takes the Colorado School of Mines as the research object, which isrenowned in the world, by using literature analysis method, case analysismethod, interview method. From its current situation of construction history,construction concept, talent training, scientific research, teaching staff and campusculture, to research and summarize the successful experience about the practice ofColorado School of Mines to become a World-class University of Earth Science, toprovide the corresponding enlightenment to our local universities to becomea World-class university.Through all aspects study of Colorado School of Mines,I found that ColoradoSchool of Mines can harvest their good brand image worldwide, mainly come from:(1) its accurate position based on its school vision, keep the "small but excellent" education mode, pay attention to the quality of education;(2) according to the needsof construction and development for itself, set subjects and majors around the earth,energy and environmental related fields, focus on the development of specializeddisciplines;(3) emphasis on investment and income proportion in education, focus onthe quality of personnel training, outstanding graduates in short supply;(4) emphasison research quality, focus on transformation of scientific research, has distinctivecharacteristics of the combining of production, teaching and research;(5) for teachingstaff, “flexible ways of screening talents”, freedom of academic environment andreasonable performance evaluation system help to continuously improve the quality ofteachers;(6) insist the international view of talents, and actively introduce andcultivate World-class talents.According to 140 years construction history of Colorado School of Mines, theimportant inspirations for us to build a World-class University of Earth Science are:(1) one school can be successful or not, does not lie in scale, it is important to do thepositioning, to determine a good school philosophy;(2) one school can be successfulor not, also does not lie in the whole subject, the important thing is to concentrate itslimited resources to build a rational discipline system, and run a distinguishing feature;(3) on the basis of this, the school should establish corresponding system to protectthis, such as personnel training system, scientific management system, the system ofteachers and so on;(4) there must be an international educational philosophy.
