In present, National Matriculation English Test(NMET) is being reformed in many provinces in China, which causes people to re-examine reflect on the role of English curriculum in middle schools. Why do students have to learn English? What will happen to NMET? All these, in fact, indicate that English curriculum aim is one of important questions in English education, which is urgent to solve.Curriculum development is based on curriculum aim, so is curriculum content.Curriculum aim shows the direction of English curriculum reform, defines the range of curriculum plan, and uncovers the importance of curriculum plan. What’s more,teaching evaluation depends on it. English curriculum aim in middle school is key to English curriculum reform, which shows the way, regulate curriculum and content.The research on English curriculum aim of middle schools will make sure the importance of English education in education system.Based on English curriculum standards, English textbooks and interview notes,the author analyzes the characteristics and implementation, and describes the development track, which will make for the research of English curriculum aim and promote to construct English curriculum theory and reform English education.The thesis consists of six parts:In the first part, I introduce research background, research meaning, definition,current situation, the prospects of research, and research method.In the second part, I introduce the background of English curriculum reform, the characteristics of English curriculum aim, and implementation from 1911 to 1949.Under the social environment of English more important than Chinese, English curriculum aim has characteristics of emphasizing on practical in life. However,English teaching can not reach to the aim of conversation. There is still a big distance between aim and practical teaching.In the third part, I introduce the background of English curriculum reform, the characteristics of English curriculum aim, and implementation from 1949 to 1977.Russian teaching is overwhelming English and English suffers heavy disaster. Englishcurriculum aim simplifies requirement and pays attention to voice and vocabulary instead of listening and speaking. Students aren’t interested in learning English.In the fourth part, I introduce the background of English curriculum reform, the characteristics of English curriculum aim, and implementation from 1978 to 2000.Under the social environment of exchanges expanding and increasing demand for English talents, English curriculum aim turns from stressing reading, self-study ability,and translation to emphasizing pragmatic competence and humanism development.But the problem of “dumb English” is serious, leading to not fully realizing of listening and speaking aim.In the fifth part, I introduce the background of English curriculum reform, the characteristics of English curriculum aim, and implementation from 2000 to now.Under the background of new curriculum, English curriculum aim includes three dimension and five elements, and stress integral development. English curriculum will be improved in process of practice.In the sixth part, I analyze the rules of English curriculum aim and discuss how to deal with relative English curriculum questions.
