The actual effect of teaching is an important basis, as well as an irreplaceable yardstick, to judge whether ideological and political education has been carried out successfully. However, most students have no interest in ideological and political course, which leads to the poor effectiveness of the actual theory teaching. In higher vocational colleges, ideological and political teaching is an important way to cultivate students’ ideological-political idea, which plays a crucial role in forming the correct world view, values and outlook on life of students. With the rapid development of the market economy and the social transformation, many drawbacks have gradually appeared in the ideological and political course of higher vocational colleges. The obvious problem lies in little attention paid by colleges and no care from students to this course. Under the current teaching conditions, how to improve the effectiveness of ideological and political theory course is urgent to be solved in ideological and political education of higher vocational colleges.The author conducted a questionnaire survey on the effectiveness of ideological and political theory teaching in a higher vocational college. The survey focuses on the following subjects:students’psychological acceptance and interest of ideological and political theory course in higher vocational colleges; students’views on the quality of teachers, cognition of teaching contents and teaching methods. The result of the survey shows that students think poorly of the effectiveness of ideological and political theory course. The main problems include three aspects:teaching methods, teaching contents and quality of teachers. The reasons for failure in ideological and political theory course are as follows:matters of teaching system, teachers, teaching evaluation, and students themselves. The thesis finally discusses some strategies for improving the effectiveness of ideological and political theory course in higher vocational colleges, namely, institutional guarantee, integration of teaching contents, reform of teaching methods, change of evaluation ways and strengthening of teaching staff construction.
