Research On The Artistic Effect Of Sports Photography

Following the advent of picture-reading era, our picture viewers have also entered a quick-viewing age. Photography is a special medium with its own charm and advantage, and as one of its categories, sports photography is not only confined to communications concerning its artistic value, but also plays a significant role in the domain of art. Our age is characterised by prevalent pictures and photos, but enchanting and artistic sports photos are so rare throughout the whole sports photography domain. Therefore, how to improve the artistic effect of photo and differentiate itself from other sports photography becomes the key factor to increasing the quality and attraction of the photo. In such a diversified age, how to bring the artistic effect of sports photography into full play should be every photographer’s main concern.The author has carried out his research by referring to documents and materials, consulting experts, analysing examples, logical analysis and so on. By defining the related concepts of sports photography, the author introduces the readers what sports photography is. The analysis shows the six features of sports photography: authenticity, rapidity, competitiveness, variability, technique and affectivity, and after the research it is concluded that sports photography is presented to us by the cooperation of the following elements: shutter speed, camera lens, shooting angle, light and scene. The comprehensive application of these elements is a necessary method to achieve the artistic effect of sports photography.By analysing the artistic features of sports photography, the author demonstrates that different physical means and reaction methods applied in sports photography win itself a place of its own in the domain of art. While a sports photographer is choosing a shooting target, he has several elements formed in his head already such as point, line or surface. Therefore, sports photography is characterised by its plasticity and reality. When analysing the artistic choice of sports photography in terms of choosing picture theme and constructing visual scene, the author holds that the subject should be overally considered without neglecting details. The subject should be distinctive and well set off. A sports photographer should uses his camera to catch the most exciting moment in the match field. When constructing a visual scene, a sports photographer should pursue a novel and creative effect, and study how to achieve a visual effect featuring novelty and creativity from the aspects of shooting timing, angle and technique.Examples are given from the aspects of shooting timing, angle and technique to analysize the creation method and artistic effect of some excellent sports photos. Then the author finds out seven problems in terms of the artistic effect of modern sports photography: a photographer’s insufficient painting skill, poor use of light and shadow, unfamiliarity with camera, a lack of artistic beauty in photo, inaccurate shooting timing, insufficient artistic creation and a lack of artistic thinking of photo viewers, and gives his solutions to these problems accordingly. The author mainly concludes these eight solutions which can help improve the artistic effect of sports photography: choosing a good theme, constructing a favorable visual scene, improving photographer’s painting skill and capacity to use light and shadow, getting more skillful at using camera, improving photographer’s aesthetic capacity, knowledge of art and creativity, and cultivating viewers’ artistic thinking.
