The purpose of artistic education in compulsory education system is to enable student to feel the joy of beauty, appreciate beauty in a rightful way, and dare to create beauty. Artistic education can help to cultivate the students’art tastes, develop good character, and raise their intelligence and creativity. As an important reflection of cognitive, emotional and growing process of mankind, artistic education, which cannot be substituted by other discipline, has played a unique role in promoting the students’individual growth.The author has conducted a questionnaire survey among140art teachers from20rural schools of compulsory education in the F county of Hunan province. During the survey, principles and some retired teachers were interviewed, which gave us latest information about the art courses in these rural schools. Combined with relevant professional theoretical knowledge, statistics analysis on the collected information using SPSS software, and reference to both domestic and foreign research achievements, the study has effectively served the administrative department of education to promote the rural art education development.According to the survey, the prominent problems of art course in rural areas are as follows:first, art curriculum plan is generally not performed well in rural schools; second, these schools are hardly equipped with relevant facilities for art courses; third, art teachers have little chance for career promotion and don’t enjoy their deserved social status as a teacher. The main reasons for this phenomenon are people’s bias over art courses, poor infrastructure facilities, and lack of art teachers, all of which has led to the backwardness of the art education in rural areas and general pessimistic among principals, teachers, students and parents on the rural art education, therefore, it is time for us to give prominence to the teaching and education of art courses in rural areas.The study demonstrated that we still have a far and arduous way to go in attaching greater importance to the rural art education, carrying out the art curriculum in rural areas, and improving the quality of rural art education. Under such circumstances, we have to give prominence to the art curriculum and instruction in rural compulsory education system, make clear the significance of art courses in the system, change our original ideas on this aspect, and update our understanding on the art courses in rural schools. Other efforts should also include increasing the financial inputs in the art courses of rural schools, improving relevant facilities to ensure material support, building a professional teachers team with regular training and support for their professional enhancement, developing innovative ways of teaching, regulating instruction process of art curriculum and practically enhancing the education level of art courses in rural areas.
